Plain Jane

She wants the man in the books though he does not exist
She’ll never feel his touch.  Never taste his lips

She reads him about him in stories. Stories so old
He keeps her warm when the sun drops.  The nights get so cold

She wants only one man in her life.
Wants to win his heart.  Wants to be his wife.

She asks of God only one thing without a reply
Asking only for answers to that question of why?

She says Why!  Why!  Why .. must I live my life alone?  Alone!

Plain Jane reads to herself by the light of the moon.
She thinks the man from the books will come finding her soon.

He’ll ride in on a white horse.  He’ll be here one day
And they’ll run off together and start a new way.

Plain Jane where will you go.  Oh what will you do?
When the man from the storybooks never comes true.

Will you fall to your knees?  Will you scream at the sky?
Asking only for answer to the question of why.

She says Why!  Why!  Why .. must I live my life alone?  Alone!
